Guatemala is a minor Central American nation, which starts as a part of United States of Central America. It can be formed by the decision Become Guatemala or it can be released normally. It borders Honduras, El Salvador and British Belize, and it is the largest and probably the powerful of the 5 nations making up USCA. It has Central American as the primary culture like the rest of the Central American countries, but unlike the others Mayan is an accepted culture. Roughly a third of its population is the primary culture, Central American, and the rest is the accepted culture Mayan.
Guatemala has an unconquered core on British owned Belize. It is however almost impossible to retake from the United Kingdom. If one can get an alliance with USA, it might be possible though.
The decision Become Guatemala requires that USCA only owns provinces with Guatemalan cores. For the requirements to be fulfilled, the country actually has to become a lot smaller and thus weaker. From a solely strategic point of view, it is a bad decision to pursue, but it might serve roleplaying purposes. If USCA has lost all its other provinces and cores, it does make sense however, as the decision gives 30 prestige, which is quite a lot compared to Guatemalas size and situation, and it also adds Mayan as an accepted culture. One can consider to release all of the other Countries in USCA voluntarily, so that they will be puppets of Guatemala instead of fully independent countries.
The 4 other countries, Colombia or Mexico might become a threat, but it is not really an present danger. Getting into UKs or USAs sphere will remove all threats for good.
In the 1861 scenario it is an independent country alongside the 4 other Central American nations. The strategy is not that different from playing a released nation in 1836.
