A picture of the fractioned Germany in 1836. Baden is the one in the southwestern corner, bordering France and Switzerland

One of the minor South German states, Baden starts in the sphere of influence of Austria Austria and has the possibility to form South German Federation South German Federation and ultimately a unified Germany Germany. It is smaller than both Bavaria Bavaria and Württemberg Württemberg and thus is the most difficult to accomplish this with. However, with its high literacy rate, decent-sized population and considerable industrial capacity, the country can become a Great Power if played right. Initially the main obstacle is acquiring a second state.

Initial position

While having a small territory, Baden has the advantages of having 80% literacy rate and a total population of 1.3 million, most of them being Catholic.pngCatholic South Germans. Bordering Bavaria and Hesse-Darmstadt Hesse-Darmstadt to the north, Württemberg and a small enclave of Prussia Prussia to the east, France France to the west and Switzerland Switzerland to the south, the country's main problem is that it does not have much room to expand. Its Badische Armee starts out with just two brigades, and the ability to form two more upon mobilization. Since its main neighbors are all stronger than it, it is important for Baden to ally other countries in Austria's sphere of influence, and Austria itself, as they will become important allies in gaining new territory.

At one point or another, Baden will however have to break with the other south German states in order to form SGF and secure longterm survival.
