Holstein is today a part of Germany, but in 1836 it was a vassal of 
Denmark. It lies just south of Denmark. 
Prussia usually tries to influence it as it is needed for the formation of 
North German Federation and later 
Germany. If Denmark becomes a great power it can prevent Germany from forming by keeping Holstein in its sphere of influence.
Holstein can form North German Federation itself, but it is very difficult as it needs to first gain independence from Denmark, and then win several wars against Prussia and all of its German allies. If they manages to do so however, Danish will become an accepted culture in Germany which can be quite an advantage.
Holstein or its sphere owner has the possibility to build the Kiel Canal. Kiel, the capital of Holstein is also required for the German decision Friedrich Krupp Germaniawerft.
