Sweden is a secondary power in Scandinavia in northern Europe. It borders with Russia and
Denmark.
Sweden controls both modern Sweden and modern
Norway.
It is a good nation a newcomer, as it has a decent military, a fantastic literacy and an early goal in forming Scandinavia. One can ignore European politics and avoid trouble, or engage in them actively. On top of its fantastic literacy, it also have the decision Folkskolereformen, which further improves it research points and makes it the single best nation for research.
Decisions
Sweden has a fair amount unique decisions. Most of them are good but not game changing decisions.
- Svenska Pansarbätsföreningen
- Borggårdstalet!
- The Vega Expedition
- Folkskolereformen
- Motala Verkstad
- Abandon Finland
Achieving Great Power
Sweden starts at an excellent position for achieving Great power status. It boasts a good array of RGOs primarily iron and
timber, a highly literate population and a dominant party (Conservatives) that supports State Capitalism.
The fastest way to increase the score is going for Cultural technologies that give a prestige bonus, right from the start. That will elevate the country to Great Power as soon as the first prestige awarding inventions get discovered.
In the meantime, industrialization is easy, as Sweden can afford to build many factories and the political party allows it. Cement and Glass are good choices for the first factories. This way, when railways become available, the
capitalists base can build the railway grid.
Next in row is to form Scandinavia. For this Great power status is needed as well as an intact Denmark to be included in the Sphere of Influence (and Schleswig and
Iceland if they are independent) or taken by might. The Diplomatic way is by far the easiest.
If Sweden intends to form Scandinavia, but Prussia or
Austria has taken
Schleswig from Denmark, it is useful to use the "free people" Casus belli on Schleswig. It does not cost as much infamy as acquire state and it will start as a part of Swedens SOI. If Sweden is not a Great power and Schleswig will be left without a sphere, Denmark usually annexes Schleswig itself.
Denmark
Including Denmark to Swedens Sphere of Influence is not hard. It is keeping Prussia or Austria from taking parts of Denmark that is hard. Prussia and Austria hold cores on Danish Schleswig-Holstein once they have researched Nationalism and Imperialism. Because of this, the AI for Prussia and Austria will attempt to take Schleswig-Holstein after the first few years of the game. This means that Scandinavia can be formed simply by sphering Denmark, without the need to fight a tough war with Prussia or Austria.
If one does not feel like it is cheating, one can release Norway and Jan Mayen when one are a great power and just about to form Scandinavia. That way one can lose 10 infamy at the cost of 10 prestige.
Finland
Finland next, this is the harder one. Sweden has cores in Finland if they did not chose the abandon Finland decision. abandon Finland will make Sweden lose its cores in exchange for 10 prestige.
Finland does not have a large population nor a good literacy (initial population:371.850). One should seriously consider if 10 prestige is more worth it.
Military Option
The harder option is to Declare a war of unification on Russia to acquire the northern Finland states. There are about 27,000 Soldiers scattered through far western Russia and Finland as well as 36,000 in St. Petersburg. Another 37,000 are stationed next to Austria. This is a very hard war as Sweden has a tiny population and thus a tiny army. Build forts and then wait until Russia is at war for this. Due to Swedens great literacy, it will have a modern army compared to the Russian. This advantage will increase more and more as time goes. Repeat for Finland's other states.
Crisis Option
Sweden can consider to start a crisis by using the increase tension national focus. This can be used on Russia's provinces to start a crisis. If the 7 other will help Sweden, Russia can be forced to give up Finland. However, this must be done before Sweden is a Great Power.
United Kingdom, Prussia and Austria will likely back Sweden up, if Russia isn't too powerful.
Further Ambitions
There are Austria, Prussia/NGF/
Germany and Russia right next to Sweden and one can get stronger by beating any of them.
From Austria or Russia one can add more countries to the Sphere of Influence by releasing them, while from Prussia annex parts of northern
Germany. Allies are useful for such plans, as they are all of them more powerful than Sweden, at least early on.
Looking for opportunities and the right timing can greatly aid in this.
Sweden is in a relatively safe position.
If one has invested in a strong navy, it can keep Prussia from landing troops in southern Sweden. or with some luck and the right timing, one can lock the Prussian or Russian fleet out of the Baltic and easily blockade their ports.
