Relations indicate how well two countries like each other. This is expressed as a numerical value which ranges from -200 to +200, where -200 means they hate you and +200 means they love you. A country's relations with another determine how likely it is to hurt or help the other country, such as by entering military alliances with it or joining wars against it.

It is not possible to fabricate a Casus belli against another nation if the relation is greater than 100. The higher the relations, the easier it is for a great power to influence another country.

One can improve the relation between your nation and another. The relationship value between Denmark and Holstein can be seen next to the name Denmark

Many decisions and events require two nations to have above or below a certain relation threshold like Attack The Laagers requiring Zulu Zulu to have below 100 with Transvaal Transvaal and Oranje Oranje

Increasing Relations

  • "Increase relations" diplomatic action (+15 relation)
  • "Military Alliance" diplomatic action (+100 relation)
  • Accepting a peace offer (+5 relation)
  • Accepting an allies call to war (+20 relation)
  • Getting military access to another country (+30 relation)
  • Giving military access to another country (+10 relation)
  • "Pay war subsidies" diplomatic action (+20 relation)
  • "Increase Opinion" diplomatic action (+20 relation)
  • Specific events and decisions

Gradual increase:

  • Neighbours at Peace (+0.6 relation per year if both countries are at peace)
  • Military Access (+0.3 relation per year if you get military access to another country. Note that you do not get this bonus if you give military access to another country.)
  • Puppet-Master Relationship (+3 relation per year if you are a puppet or if you have a puppet)

Decreasing Relations
