'''Java''' is today a part of Indonesia but in 1836 it was the largest of the {{flag|Netherlands}}' colonies. It has 1.94 million citizens and lies on an island of the Malay peninsula. It is a medium-sized [[Asia]]n nation, which can be led to a quite powerful position.

==Inital position==

Compared to the Malay countries ({{flag|Brunei}}, {{flag|Johore}}, {{flag|Atjeh}} and {{flag|Bali}}) Java is a military super power. It starts of with only a single brigade but 8 more stands ready and one can easily gather an army that counts 19-20 brigades. This leaves the surrounding countries open for conquest. Maybe even the Dutch colonies if the [[Netherlands]] are trapped in a war elsewhere.

===Economy===
Java has a healthy economy, mainly powered by its {{icon|tea}}tea and {{icon|coffee}}coffee production and can hold education budget at 100% which is recommended. Due to Java's low [[literacy]] it is important to get 4% [[clergymen]] as soon as possible. [[National focus]] and a 100% education budget will do the trick. Since Java is one single huge state, only a single national focus is needed to promote on the entire island.

The primary culture Javan is common in one's initial land, but doesn't live anywhere else. Therefore, if one expands too much one can lack national foci later in the game. When Krakatoa explodes around 1880s it will reduce the population of Java significantly.

==First steps==
One should begin to create an army and fabricate a [[casus belli]] on one of the Malaysian nations early. Everyone loves [[Johore]] for its {{icon|precious metal}}gold mines, and so should Java. One does however need ships to sail to Johore. Bali is more accessible, and so is Atjeh if one can get military access from the Netherlands.

After the initial actions, one can try to annex as many small Asian nations as [[infamy]] tolerates. Besides [[Bali]], one have to use transport ships to reach the other Asian nations.

The conquest of the near [[uncivilized nations]] and the focus on clergymen should be enough to [[westernize]] relatively early.

==Post-westernizing==
After westernizing Java should have the military strength to remove the Netherlands completely from South-East Asia. The Spanish controlled {{Flag|Philippines}} can also be a possible target. One can also take a foothold in mainland Asia against {{flag|Siam}}, {{flag|Burma}} or {{flag|Dai Nam}}.

Java does not have any resources that is ideal for an upstarting [[industry]].

===Colonization===
[[Westernization]] and a secure [[secondary power]] position is relatively easy to achieve before 1870. One would have to specifically [[research]] the techs needed to colonize ([[Medicine]], [[Machine Guns]] and [[State and Government]]) but it is doable. The uncolonized parts of Indonesia and Malaysia, Polynesia and the Indian Ocean are easily accessible, especially if the Dutch has been pushed out of the area.

===Industry===
Java produces {{icon|sulphur}}sulphur and {{icon|fruit}}, but other than that it does not have good [[RGO]]s for industry. Neither does the surrounding provinces, that Java likely will have conquered while westernizing, so industry might prove a little difficult.

==Events==
After 1886, the event [[Krakatoa Explodes]] will happen. It will reduce the [[life rating]] of Bogor by {{red|10}} as well as kill {{red|80%}} of all [[POPs]] in the province. There is nothing the player can do to prevent it.
